Support » Plugin: WordPress Slider Block Gutenslider » Captions – why not use the built-in media capability?

    Every image in the WP Media Library can have a caption. When an image is included on a page the caption is picked up automatically. When a gallery is included on a page, the captions are picked up automatically.

    Yet, Gutenslider ignores those captions and we have to use an extra text-on-top process to display captions. If I have already invested the time in adding captions to my photos, why do I have to do it all over again for Gutenslider? Why not use what is automatically built in?

    Hey @bobeaston,

    if this is a feature request, how would you like it to be implemented, considering some users don’t want captions. While others want different captions? Ideas? Set the captions AS a default?

    A checkbox In the block settings?

    OK. That will work.

    Hey @bobeaston,

    one more question. Do you have a working example of a gutenberg block, that contains media and automatically includes captions? We checked the core blocks “Media + Text” and “Cover”, both load media but have no automatic caption support. Do you know any example in the wild?

    Try the Image block and the Gallery block.
    For examples, see http://www.grinlinggibbonsphotos.com

    You might take a look at how MetaSlider offers 3 radio buttons:
    * Media Library Caption
    * Media Library Description
    * Enter manually

    I haven’t looked at the internal code, but I’ll wager that both Caption and Description come along in the array that results from getting a Media Library object.

    All the best,

    A more specific example: https://www.grinlinggibbonsphotos.com/patrick-damiaens/

    For single images, the caption appears in black text below the image. For galleries, the captions appear in white text within the image. Positions of those captions is determined by the gutenberg css.

    hey @bobeaston,

    thank you for the examples. We will implement this feature soon. However we will not provide styling. There are many different users with many different style tastes. While theme authors will probably style core blocks with their themes we do not expect them to provide custom gutenslider styles. Next year however we are planning to provide lots of style templates for our slider.

    That said, we can however tell you the required css, as soon as we implemented default captions, to achieve that looks you get from gallery / image.

    Hey @bobeaston,

    we added the option for automatic captions in the latest release 4.3.6. See this blog post for a video of how to use it.

    The feature that lets you automatically add captions to all your slides at once, is only available in the pro version, as bulk editing is a Gutenslider Pro feature.
    However as you came up with the idea, we want to give you a pro lifetime license in return.

    If you are interested, send a mail to gutenslider@eedee.net to settle this.

    Thanks again.

    THANKS eedee!
